Mercer County Community College (MCCC) celebrates Black History Month with a full slate of events, from an opening day multi-culture fashion show to closing ceremonies featuring New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver.
“Destination vs. Reality” is this year’s theme, with the college hosting a number of special events emphasizing culture, relationships and education. The events are split between MCCC’s James Kerney Campus (JKC) in Trenton and its West Windsor Campus. Closing ceremonies will be held at West Windsor.
The following events, open to the public, kick off with a Fashion Show Scholarship Event at JKC on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will see minority vendors selling a variety of products, as well as performances from a live band formed by MCCC alumni.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Feb. 5 at 11:30 a.m. at Kerney Hall (JKC), and will feature a luncheon catered by 1911 Smoke House Grill. The keynote speaker is Marjorie Perry, President and CEO of MZM Construction and Management Company Inc.
On Feb. 22 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Kelsey Theatre on MCCC’s West Windsor Campus will host Celebrations of Song and Dance, a series of performances by MCCC students and staff and hosted by staff members Hope Jarvis and Quenten Couch. Also featured will be duets and soloists with Hope Fitness Ministries Dance Team, Essence Ministry Caribbean Band, Little Blessings praise dancers, and Elder Al Matlock Jr. of the Mellowaires.
Then, on Feb. 26, the public is invited to a Black Love Panel Discussion at Kerney Hall at 5 p.m.
Finally, on Feb. 27, the West Windsor Campus will host the Closing Ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver will be the keynote speaker, and the service will feature cuisine prepared by Mercer staff, as well as an African drumming presentation by MCCC staff and friends.
