Mastering the classic board games checkers and chess often requires a great deal of thought, strategy, and time. Finding a great burger in the Capital City, however, is not hard at all given Trenton’s myriad dining choices. One way to wet that appetite is to head over to Checkers Food and Spirits on South Warren Street.
Checkers Food and Spirits has been a mainstay in Trenton for almost 35 years as owner Tom Fowler has been serving up some of the best burgers in the area since 1986. Fowler previously operated the Soho restaurant in Chambersburg before bringing the icon taste with him to downtown Trenton. The restaurant, which is renowned for its burgers, has a full bar and features fabulous chili made fresh daily.
Reminiscent of a 1950’s establishment, Checker offers a historic decor that brings you back to a much simpler time. The restaurant features a long bar encompassing drafts, wine, spirits, and the kitchen below a few televisions. Tables are comfortably packed into the restaurant across from the bar and in the back. If you plan on grabbing lunch, arrive early because the restaurant is usually almost full every weekday as state workers and locals flock to the spot habitually.
