Mayor W. Reed Gusciora along with City Council President Crystal Feliciano, and Interim Recreation Director Paul Harris, celebrated the newly constructed Villa Park Playground, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony located at Lyndale and Centennial Avenue.
Demolition on the current playground began on Monday, September 9th, and was completed within twenty-four hours. The new playground took less than a week to complete. The project, set at $305,104.39, is being financed through American Rescue Plan federal funds.
“Our brand-new playground is designed with every child in mind. Our playground features numerous interactive sensory panels, ensuring that children of all abilities can enjoy a safe and inclusive play area,” said Mayor Reed Gusciora. “This playground is a symbol of our commitment to fostering growth in our Capital City,” said Mayor Gusciora.
The new play area includes several interactive sensory features to provide a fun space for children of all ages and abilities. The Play Panels, designed by Unlimited Play, are used to provide sensory interaction on the playground. The Quiet Groove provides a retreat for children who may become overstimulated by the noise of the playground. The Revolution Inclusive Spinner is designed to allow a child who may be in a wheelchair or use a walker to transfer onto it and take a spin with their friends. The Inclusive and Generation Swing Seats allow children of all abilities and toddlers to swing with their parents or siblings.
“This playground is not just about fun, it’s about fostering an environment where every child feels valued and supported. It represents our broader vision of inclusivity, where every member of our community can enjoy and benefit from the public spaces we create,” said Council President Feliciano.
As Parks & Recreation continues its efforts to upgrade City parks and facilities, residents can expect new playgrounds at the following sites: Unity Park, Orange Street, Carlos Negron, Second Street, Rutherford Avenue, Gil Carter (Garfield), Cooper, Jefferson Vincent, Wetzel, and Grant Avenue.
“We are excited that we can help improve the quality of life of City residents through upgrades to our parks,” stated Paul Harris, Interim Parks & Recreation Director.
