The Trenton Museum Society is proud to announce the award-winning works for Ellarslie Open 36, on display at the Trenton City Museum from May 4 – July 7, 2019.

Award Winners  This year, 24 artists won awards in eight categories.  Thanks to support from our sponsors, most artists received a prize along with the award.  In total, more than $6,000 was awarded in cash, gift certificates and gift sets.

Patrick Seufert, Dual Extension; Best in Show – Painting

Talented newcomer to the Ellarslie Open, Cassaundra Flor won for Best in Show Overall for her dramatic black and white etching Aeolian Cityscape.  Among the top prize winners in the categories were Patrick Seufert for the fine brushwork in his oil painting, Dual Extension; Joseph Gilchrist for his crisp archival pigment print photograph, Praise Waiteth for Thee, and Margie Milne’s romantic drawing, Portrait of Gabrielle.

Juror Liz Kelton Sheehan, Independent Curator, selected pieces for the exhibit that establish the wide variety of styles represented by Delaware Valley artists. According to Sheehan, “The 2019 Ellarslie Open showcases strength and effort, vision and experimentation, and above all, rewards artists who offered a distinct point of view.”

In addition to the awards and prizes given out at the opening night VIP reception on May 3, the trustees of the Trenton Museum Society determined to purchase four pieces from the show for the fine art collection at the Trenton City Museum. Works by Richard Hoffman, Joseph Kazimierczyk, Chee Bravo and Deborah Pey are now part of the permanent collection.

Co-curators Carol Hill and Carolyn Stetson announced that they are passing the torch to a new curator for future Ellarslie Open juried shows.  “We have had lots of fun curating the show for seven years.  We’ve loved getting to know the artists who participate and hope that we have made the whole process as exciting and meaningful for the artists and patrons as it has been for us.”
