Trenton’s streets belong to everyone. Whether you are a motorist, pedestrian, or cyclist, every Trentonian deserves the opportunity to commute with ease, no matter how they choose to get around. When our streets are carefully curated with the well-being of all in mind, our community becomes a safer place for all who call it home. The East Trenton Collaborative is currently hard at work at making the East Trenton streets as safe as can be, and now they need your help to make this vision a reality.

The East Trenton Collaborative (ETC) is currently seeking donations towards a crowdfunding campaign in order to make the East Trenton neighborhood safer for all pedestrians and cyclists, particularly students walking and biking to Trenton’s McKnight Elementary School. Through the East Trenton Campaign’s resident-led Traffic Safety Community Organizing Committee (TSCOC), the ETC has begun installing colorful asphalt art and traffic-calming elements to reduce speeding and improve safety. While the East Trenton Campaign is halfway through their crowdfunding campaign to install bike racks and street are at McKnight Elementary, they need your help to push this important project over the finish line. In addition to community donations, the ETC is also competing for up to $5,000 in matching funds based on donor numbers.

Safe, walkable streets are a major priority in East Trenton. As bussing is not provided for students living within two miles of their school (except for those with special needs), many children opt to walk or bike to school. Adding bike racks and street art will slow traffic and give kids a secure place to park their bikes, making their journey to school safer and more enjoyable for all.

This project is part of the East Trenton Campaign’s broader mission to improve road safety for walkers and cyclists. Some recent and ongoing efforts include:

  • Traffic calming measures on N Clinton Ave, Houghton Ave, and Girard Ave to reduce speeding.
  • One-way street conversions, particularly around schools, to improve safety for children.
  • $35,000 in funding to support Trenton Cycling Revolution’s bike repair and giveaway program.
  • $10,000 for bike and pedestrian safety training in Trenton’s K-8 schools.
  • Safety enhancements on Mulberry St, including high-visibility crosswalks and rumble strips, secured at no cost through collaboration with NJDOT.

The East Trenton Collaborative is a community organizing and development initiative in the East Trenton neighborhood of Trenton’s North Ward. The ETC plays a vital role in uniting residents, businesses, and partners to improve traffic safety, parks, and environmental health in East Trenton. By facilitating conversations and action on community priorities, the East Trenton Collaborative works tirelessly to make East Trenton a great place to live, work, and play.
