“Restoring a Cultural Legacy” is the theme for Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC) annual observance of Black History Month in February as the college hosts a number of special events showcasing history, fellowship and inspiration.
Activities for the community will take place at both MCCC’s West Windsor Campus, located at 1200 Old Trenton Road, and the James Kerney Campus (JKC) in Trenton at 102 North Broad Street. Festivities at Kelsey Theatre on the West Windsor Campus kick off on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. with a dance concert featuring routines featuring routines from African, hip-hop, tap and other genres. All are welcome to attend this free performance.
Other free events for the public include a “Who Am I?” Fashion Show, presented by MCCC Fashion Design students on Friday, Feb. 8 at JKC. Students will showcase their creations on the runway in Trenton Hall starting at 6 p.m. The public is also invited to a panel discussion, “Wisdom Through the Ages,” on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at noon at the West Windsor Campus Student Center, as well as “Spoken Word,” a presentation by an African storyteller on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. in Kelsey Theatre.
The Closing Ceremony will take place at JKC’s Kerney Hall on Thursday, Feb. 28, with refreshments served at noon. A screening of the 2018 Academy Award-nominated super hero film “Black Panther” will be shown at 3 p.m. on the West Windsor Campus and at 5 p.m. in Trenton.
