Mercer Elementary School, a school designed for students presenting a wide variety of learning and developmental needs, is competing to win a learning garden made from recycled Takis® packaging as part of the Takis® Back-to-School Recycling Challenge. The challenge is sponsored by Takis®, the iconic brand known for its intensely spicy rolled tortilla chips, and TerraCycle®, the global leader in recycling hard-to-recycle items.
The Takis® Back-to-School Recycling Challenge encourages students, teachers, and communities to collect and recycle Takis® packaging for free through the Takis® Snacks Free Recycling Program. Participants contribute to a cleaner environment while also having the chance to win exciting prizes.
“As part of Mercer County Special Services School District, Mercer Elementary School serves students with disabilities who live throughout Mercer County. Seeing upcycled products is greatly beneficial to our students, helping them to better understand the process of reusing old materials for new purposes,” said Vance Bachman, Teacher of Students with Disabilities at Mercer Elementary. “It is highly rewarding to frequently hear from participants in our school collection program how they are so pleasantly surprised at how much less trash they have at home once they’ve started collecting ‘TerraCyclable’ materials. At Mercer Elementary School the staff and students take pride in protecting the planet while simultaneously raising money for our school by participating in the TerraCycle program.”
The contest, which began on August 19, is open to schools nationwide that participate in the Takis® Snacks Free Recycling Program. The top three schools that recycle the most Takis® packaging between August 19 and November 18, 2024, will win grand prizes, including a garden bed, compost bin, and flower planters—all made from recycled materials—along with Takis® x TerraCycle collection boxes. Additionally, thirty individual participants will win Takis®-branded backpacks, pencil cases, friendship bracelets, and, of course, snacks!
A complete set of rules for the Takis® Back-to-School Recycling Contest can be found [here].
The Takis® Snacks Free Recycling Program is open to any individual, school, or community organization. Participants can also earn TerraCycle® Recycling Reward points for each shipment, which can be redeemed for cash donations to schools, charities, or nonprofits of their choice.
