Summertime will be here in just a matter of weeks, and before you know it, school will once again be out for the year. While it can be tempting to laze away those summer days, just because school is out doesn’t mean the learning has to stop! If you’re a parent or a guardian, you know just how difficult it can be to plan out fun, enriching activities to keep little minds busy and engaged throughout this fun-filled season. But thanks to a bit of help from your friends at the local library, this upcoming summer can be your family’s most memorable one yet.

If you’re a resident of the Garden State, it’s no secret that our corner of the world is packed to the brim with some of the nation’s finest museums and cultural institutions. Whether you’re a little learner or a grown-up looking to embrace their inner child, a day at the museum can spark curiosity, enhance imagination, and immerse us into a fascinating new world of discovery. As a Trentonian, if at day at the museum sounds like just what the doctor ordered, you are in luck! As a member of the Trenton Free Public Library, you are able to access free admission to a selection number of institutions promising educational fun for the whole family.

Eligible members of the Trenton Free Public Library who are ages 18 and up are welcome to check out passes for the following museums:

  • The Newark Museum of Art: Admits 2 adults and all children under 17; passes available for a 4-day loan period
  • Eastern State Penitentiary: Admits 6 people of any age, can be any combination of adults and children. Children under 7 also receive free daytime admission. The passes will be loaned out for a 4-day period. Please do note that these passes only cover daytime admission and cannot be used for Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary, Night Tours: Summer Twilight, discounts, special events, or facility rentals.

For those interested in taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity, please visit the Trenton Free Public Library, located at 120 Academy St, Trenton, NJ 08608. Upon your arrival, you can visit the Reference Desk, who will be able to provide you with pick-up and drop-off instructions regarding borrowing these passes. Please note that if a library patron has any lost or damaged items or any outstanding fines in excess of $5 currently on their account, they will not be eligible to take out passes until these issues have been resolved. Additionally, please be aware that if the museum passes are late, lost, or unreturned, patrons will be charged $5 a day for up to $25. If not returned after this five-day period, the pass is considered lost and the patron will be charged for the full replacement cost. If you placed a hold on the museum pass and do not pick it up within 24 hours of notification it will be considered a “no show” and the pass will be issued to the next Library user. Since demand for the pass is high, two “no shows” in a 60-day period may result in a 2-month block on museum pass holds.

For more information on this innovative program, please check out the Trenton Free Public Library’s website, linked here: Museum Passes – TFPL. If you have any questions or would like any help getting set up with passes, please contact the library staff at (609) 392-7188 for further assistance. A day at the museum sounds like a delight for the whole family, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to make memories with your family this summer!
