Trenton is home to the New Jersey Food Council (NJFC) which represents nearly 400 companies including 1,200 retail food stores, wholesalers, manufacturing and service companies that collectively employ more than 200,000 people. NJFC’s mission is to provide vision and leadership to advance the interest of its members – and enhance the image of the food industry.
New Jersey boasts a thriving $126 billion food industry and agriculture sector. According to the Food and Retail Association, food and beverage stores alone produce an annual GDP of $4,945,000,000. NJFC keeps its members at the top of legislators’ agendas by advocating on legislative and regulatory issues and providing accurate and timely information to educate and inform government, the public and its members. Strategic alliances further the mission.
Before NJFC was founded, the food industry was being adversely affected by often well-intentioned but misguided legislation from Trenton. In 1969, a small group of New Jersey small food stores joined with large retailers to form the Council to promote and protect the interests of food retailers before state government. Linda Doherty serves as NJFC’s current President with Richard Saker of Saker ShopRites as Board Chairman. NJFC runs a Leadership Development Program and awards scholarships to students who aspire to have careers in the food distribution industry.
