“In 2020, many reacted to the blatant crimes committed against Black Americans in the form of police brutality and pledged to support their fellow Black citizens in any way they could. Yet oftentimes, these horrific acts of violence and displays of racism are the tip of a very deep iceberg of unseen racism that creates a social climate in which it is easier for these acts to occur,” said Oscar Holmes IV, who illustrates the variety of subtle dangers Black Americans face and shows us how our understanding can contribute to collective healing.

“The TEDx team had to cancel the in-person conference and all of us were left to figure out how to send in virtual talks,” said Holmes. “Can I tell you how fortunate I am to have been a part of this group and to have established a friendship with Scott Fischer!! He was so gracious in allowing me to use his AMAZING Studio @Kearny Point and he produced my video!!!!”

The RUSE program, which Holmes founded and is sponsored by Rutgers School of Business–Camden(RSBC), the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (AACCNJ) and Delta Epsilon Boulé, introduces business and entrepreneurship to high-achieving RSBC undergraduate students and 10th, 11th, and 12th grade New Jersey high school students. John E. Harmon, AACCNJ Founder, President and CEO, has appeared on Holmes’ Diversity Matters podcast to talk about economic empowerment for Black people and the state of New Jersey.

TEDx is a grassroots initiative, created in the spirit of TED’s overall mission to research and discover “ideas worth spreading.” TEDx brings the spirit of TED to local communities around the globe through TEDx events. These events are organized by passionate individuals who seek to uncover new ideas and to share the latest research in their local areas that spark conversations in their communities. TEDx events include live speakers and recorded TED Talks, and are organized independently under a free license granted by TED. These events are not controlled by TED, but event organizers agree to abide by our format, and are offered guidelines for curation, speaker coaching, event organizing and more. They learn from us and from each other. More than 3000 events are now held annually.
