On the next two Fridays, the Trenton Health Team (THT) will be conducting free, easy-to-access screenings for cervical cancer for Trenton area women who live in Mercer County, have an income at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level and are uninsured or under-insured. This year, according to cancer.net, an estimated 13,170 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer — and 4,250 women will die from the disease. But, “Cervical cancer is preventable,” says Samantha Anderson, THT Community Nurse Practitioner. “Spending about half an hour at a screening can save your life.” Screening can help detect abnormal (changed) cells early, before they turn into cancer. Most deaths from cervical cancer could be prevented by regular screenings and follow-up care.

Austin Health Center, Capital Health, the City of Trenton, and the Pennsauken Diagnostic Center to provide a variety of important community health services such as education, outreach, early detection, case management, screening, tracking, and follow-up. The New Jersey Department of Health, through its NJCEED program pays for not only cervical cancer screening, but also additional diagnostic testing, as needed. Patients diagnosed with cervical cancer can enroll in Medicaid to cover treatment costs.
