Trenton’s pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War will be the backdrop for the next outing of the Trenton Walks! program this Sat., Jan. 4. Please join us at the Battle Monument in downtown Trenton at 9:30 a.m. as we celebrate the turning tides of the Revolutionary War while also celebrating being outdoors and being together on a 2.8-mile walk that covers the First and Second Battles of Trenton.

This walk will be the first of 2025, following a very successful inaugural year for Trenton Walks! This program launched last April under the executive sponsorship of the Trenton Green Team and support from the Circuit Coalition’s Mercer County Action Team. Through the ensuing months of 2024 169 people turned out for 27 walks, covering a collective 441 miles.

Designed as a community engagement project that emphasizes healthy, environmentally friendly treks along the roads and byways of New Jersey’s capital city, Trenton Walks! will continue throughout 2025. During the winter months, one Saturday a month is slated for a walk, with additional Wednesday walks being booked as well. More information on these walks will be publicized soon. This spring, the program will revert to four or five walks each month.

For the Jan. 4 event, walkers will meet at the intersection of N. Warren and Tucker Streets just south of the Battle Monument at 9:30 a.m. Walkers will travel 2.8 miles through downtown Trenton and will end the walk at the Battle Monument around 11 a.m. Please see the attached slide on the walk route and historic sites.

“This walk is a good way to start the new year, and to recognize the special role Trenton played in the Revolutionary War,” said Tim Brill, co-chair of Trenton Walks! After British forces captured New York City in 1776, General Washington’s Continental Army crossed the Delaware River in a storm that Christmas night, known as the First Battle of Trenton, which was a small but pivotal victory for the Americans. The Second Battle of Trenton, also known as the Battle of the Assunpink Creek, on Jan. 2, 1777, was another American victory.

Brill will be joined by others who have led walks in 2024 including media guru Jacque Howard and Becky Taylor, co-chair of Trenton Walks!, as well as by history buff Ralph Siegel, who on Dec. 26 hosted the Trenton Battlefield Walking Tour, a 10-block official interpretive walk bringing to life the two Trenton battles. This Saturday’s walk will be a second chance for those who missed Siegel’s event.
