Autumn means harvest season, and throughout the nation, our agriculturally-inclined friends are reaping the bounty of this year’s harvest. After toiling over the crops all summer, now is the time to enjoy the fruits of this labor and celebrate the season’s abundance. Although farming might not be the first thing when you think of Trenton, don’t let perception fool you: plenty of agriculture is happening in our city! To celebrate the fall season’s hustle, bustle, and fun, you and your family are invited to join the Capital City Farm for their annual Fall Harvest Festival.
On Saturday, October 28th, you are invited to the Capital City Farm for a whole afternoon of autumnal excitement. The festivities will occur from 12 pm to 4 pm on the farm’s campus at 301 N Clinton Ave, Trenton, NJ 08638. This event is free to attend, and all are welcome to participate in the fun. Throughout the afternoon, guests can enjoy several seasonal activities, including games, educational exhibits, art demonstrations, a scarecrow contest, a scavenger hunt, and more. All this fun will work up an appetite, so refreshments will also be provided. From children’s activities to opportunities for hands-on learning and more, all are certain to have a blast celebrating the harvest.
Capital City Farm highlights the importance of urban agriculture and the benefits it can bring to participating communities. Whether you live in the countryside or a densely populated urban setting, we all benefit from access to healthy, locally-grown food. Urban agriculture is vital to communities like Trenton, who struggle with living in a food desert. By taking the production of fresh produce and other goods into the hands of the community, we can better serve the fundamental needs of our city’s residents.
Capital City Farm is a first-of-its-kind commercial urban farm in Trenton, created under the leadership of D&R Greenway Land and run under the guidance of seven Trenton-based organizations. The mission of Capital City Farm is to cultivate local, fresh, healthy foods and make them available to the Trenton community. The Capital City Farm also empowers residents to try farming, allowing the community to enjoy direct participation. The Capital City Farm has grown 37 varieties of fruits and vegetables annually, yielding more than 1,000 lbs., including types of cultural interest.
