The Boys and Girls Clubs of Mercer County is trying to make educating your children online a fun and enjoyable experience! Throughout the week this organization will be posting various educational and enrichment activities on its Facebook page for youth at home culminating to a fun and interactive online webinar on May 13th!

The organization aims to provide the youth of Mercer County (ages 3-18) with social, enrichment and recreational activities. Programs are offered on the weekends, over the summer and after school hours which focus on improving outcomes in developing social emotional competency, leadership skills and education. These programs also teach youth how to develop healthy and productive habits through physical activity and nutrition.

Since the start of our nationally imposed quarantine, the organization has been trying to bring the same education programs it offered to students in person, online. To do this they have posted various educational activities on their Facebook page including a read along of different stories followed up with videos and other educational tools. One activity involved students reading the story “Dragons Love Tacos” with a video showing students how they could make their own tacos. The post asked that families share their homemade taco making adventures with the organizations Facebook.

On May 13th at 7 p.m. the organization will be hosting an event called “Night of Shining Stars Online” which will be free for all families wishing to participate. The purpose of this event is to “Help build brighter futures for Mercer County’s next generation of shining stars!” according to the organization’s website.

This free 40-minute online event will benefit the Clubs’ continuation of service to local youth in these unprecedented times. Guest speakers will include Vinnie Brand, Comedian & owner of the Stress Factory Comedy Clubs, Violeta Yas, NBC 10 Meteorologist & BGC Alum and Joylette Hylick, NASA Mathematician, Author & daughter of “Hidden Figures” mathematician Katherine Johnson.
