Whether you’ve seen the commercials on TV or overhead a conversation at the office water cooler, cryptocurrency is the talk of the town. However, thousands of Americans are still scratching their heads wondering what cryptocurrency is and what it means for the future of finance. If you’re ready to learn more about the latest trend in investments, join the New Jersey State Library for their latest webinar, “Understanding Cryptocurrencies”.

On Monday, June 27th, you are invited to “Understanding Cryptocurrencies”, a one-stop shop for all things crypto. Whether you’re looking to start investing or just looking to learn what crypto is, this session will provide you with all the basics you need to get started. The conversation will kick off on Zoom from 12pm to 1pm. The afternoon’s course will be led by Arlene Ferris-Waks, Director of Complaints & Investor Outreach at the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General’s Bureau of Securities. If you’re interested in attending, registration is available on Zoom here: Register – Understanding Cryptocurrencies.

So what exactly is a cryptocurrency? Per Forbes, cryptocurrency is “a digital, encrypted, and decentralized medium of exchange”. What makes crypto distinct from other forms of currency, like the US dollar or the euro, is that it is not managed by a central authority like a government agency. Rather, the value of cryptocurrency is determined by a variety of market factors including demand, competition, and more. During the upcoming webinar, you’ll have a chance to learn about all this and more, including:

  • What is cryptocurrency
  • How it differs from paper currency
  • Types of cryptocurrencies
  • Scams related to cryptocurrencies

The day’s session will be led by Arlene Ferris-Waks, a fantastic resource for all things finance. With over 15 years of experience under her belt at the Bureau of Securities, she has her finger on the pulse of the market as well as the knowledge that investors need to know. In 2015, Ferris-Waks received the New Jersey Attorney General‘s award for excellence in public outreach. She has been employed with both the New York Stock Exchange and the American Stock Exchange, worked as a senior compliance officer at a broker-dealer, and as an investment adviser/registered representative. She holds a BA cum laude from SUNY at Buffalo and a Masters Degree from CUNY (Queens College).
