We aren’t horsing around when we say you won’t want to miss next month’s installment of Small Explorers!
On Saturday, December 9th, you and your little learners are invited to the New Jersey State Museum for this month’s edition of Small Explorers, “Horsing Around With Art”. This afternoon will be an exploration of the beauty of horses, art, and how the two intersect to create something truly magical. Each month, the New Jersey State Museum invites young children ages 6 months through 5 years old, as well as their families, to explore an engaging new topic brought to life by the fascinating exhibits at the New Jersey State Museum.
Parents have the opportunity to choose from a 9:45am, 11am, or 12:15am session, all of which will be hosted at the NJSM campus, located right in Downtown Trenton at 205 W State St, Trenton, NJ 08608. The sessions are completely free to attend, but space is limited, so be sure to enroll online as soon as possible to guarantee your spot. To register, please email njsmfsmallexplorers@gmail.com with your name and contact information, the number of children and adults in your group, and the session time you’d like to attend. Families are encouraged to register for a full year of sessions to build knowledge, skills and relationships with other families in the playgroup.
Horses have been a companion to man for centuries, and with good reason. These mild-mannered creatures have come alongside man as we’ve ridden into battle, traveled long voyages, and tilled the soil as we cultivated the land. As horses have been a part of the human experience for ages, these creatures have also become a common motif in our artwork. A suiting homage for an animal who has walked alongside humans for a millennia, you can discover an abundance of equestrian flare in all sorts of mediums and creations.
This month’s Small Explorers programming will kick off with a reading of Dr. Seuss’s “Horse Museum.” Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to explore how different artists have seen horses, and envision these beautiful animals in a brand new light. Then, get ready to discover as you get to know the horses that are trotting, galloping and posing in the NJSM’s exhibit, “American Perspectives”. Finally, kiddos will have the chance to lend a hand as they measure how big and small a horse can be. With plenty of laughter and learning in store for all, you’ll be certain to want to come along for the ride.
Small Explorers is an innovative playgroup hosted by the New Jersey State Museum on the 2nd Saturday of each month. This program, which runs October through June, invites families from the Trenton area to explore the museum with your child and connect with other families in the community, building a network of support and camaraderie along the way. Small Explorers introduces little minds to a number of engaging topics to help them discover more about the world around them. From the fascinating world of STEM to the arts, history, and more, there’s no shortage of magic to be discovered for young ones at the NJSM. For more information on the program and how you can get involved, please visit the NJSM’s website, linked here: NJSM – Small Explorers.
