When learning about history, we often hear stories of the great icons of our nation’s past. While these famous figures are undoubtedly worthy of praise, we must also remember those who, despite not being named in history books, have made tremendous sacrifices for the advancement and prosperity of the American people. To uplift the voices of African-American servicemembers past and present, join the Old Barracks for a retrospective of 400 years of African-American soldiers.
From Saturday, February 25th through Sunday, February 26th, the Old Barracks will host an engaging living history event, “Four Centuries of African-American Soldiers.” Admission to this unique and educational event is free, so you are all welcome to attend. The program will run from 10 to 4 pm on Saturday and 12 to 4 pm on Sunday. The Old Barracks Museum and the Mercer County Culture and Heritage Commission present this event.
This one-of-a-kind event honors African-American soldiers over the last 400 years. This vibrant living history program pays tribute to the contributions of African-American soldiers, sailors, and airmen to the United States Military. The program will include historical re-enactors, authentic military artifacts, and veterans who will be on-site to share their stories from their time in the service. You’ll have a chance to journey back in time as the storytellers at the Barracks tell a story spanning the generations.
Throughout the afternoon, you can hear stories from African-American soldiers spanning the Revolutionary War to World War II. Some represented regiments at the event include The Harlem Hellfighters of WWI, the 6th Regiment USCT of the Civil War, the 369th Regiment portrayed by Ebony Doughboys, and others. Despite discrimination and systemic oppression, the soldiers and service members honored through this event still chose to fight on behalf of their country bravely. Now is your opportunity to hear their stories and fully appreciate the sacrifice of those who fought to achieve life, liberty, and justice for all.
This event is a snapshot of the Old Barracks’ work year-round to shed light on the real people and stories woven through our nation’s history. Through a variety of exhibits, events, and educational opportunities, the Old Barracks Museum humanizes history. It explains significant historical events so that we can understand and appreciate them today. As a cornerstone for colonial and revolutionary history in the Garden State, the Old Barracks is a beloved landmark for visitors near and far. Whether you’re a lifelong history buff or just in the mood for an afternoon of discovery, the Old Barracks will captivate any learner.
