Today, March 20th, the Trenton Health Team will be hosting an event from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Trenton Central High School’s Hanover Campus as part of national “Kick Butts Day.” The event will feature teens speaking out against smoking and e-cigarettes and signing a pledge to never use tobacco or nicotine products.
Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. There are expected to be more than 1,000 events in schools and communities across the United States and even around the world.
On Kick Butts Day, teachers, youth leaders and health advocates organize events to:
- Raise awareness of the problem of tobacco use in their state or community;
- Encourage youth to reject the tobacco industry’s deceptive marketing and stay tobacco-free; and
- Urge elected officials to take action to protect kids from tobacco.
Kick Butts Day is organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The first Kick Butts Day was held in 1996.
This event is part of Trenton Health Team’s partnership with Trinity Health to deliver the Transforming Communities Initiative. Transforming Communities Initiative (TCI) is a multi million dollar, four-year population health effort funded by Trinity Health to address policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change and promote healthy behaviors. TCI is a grant flexible capital and technical assistance initiative, developed as a key strategy of Trinity Health’s People-Centered 2020 Community Health and Well-Being strategy, that supports innovative and evidence-based solutions to address tobacco use, childhood obesity, and community building to address the physical environment, economic revitalization, housing and other social determinants of health.
TCI focuses on populations living in low-income communities. Trenton, New Jersey, through Trenton Health Team and St. Francis Medical Center, is one of eight communities selected nationally to lead this effort, along with Springfield, Massachusetts; Maywood, Illinois; Montgomery County, Maryland; Boise, Idaho; Syracuse, New York; Fresno, California and Hartford, Connecticut.
