Beginning Saturday, February 16, 2019 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. and continuing monthly on the 3rd Saturday of each month, Jacque Howard from the Trenton 365Show will host a “Library Boxes of Trenton” series at Classics Books and Gifts located at 4 West Lafayette St in the downtown.
During the monthly series, Jacque will interview authors and discuss literacy efforts in the region. Special discounts, prizes and information will be distributed to promote civic engagement as a way to build a better community.
Library Boxes of Trenton, aka #LBOT, was born out of a creative idea to upcycle/repurpose discarded newspaper boxes into free distribution sites for reading materials. Several partners joined Jacque in this effort including the Trenton Downtown Association who supplied newspaper boxes, Classics who supplied books and the I Am Trenton Community Foundation provided seed money.
The first 15 #LBOTS were painted by local artists at a block party event at Champs, which is also a book drop off and pickup site. A sponsorship from Prometheus Publishing of Cranbury, NJ helped offset the labor and supply costs.
“This is one of my favorite projects for a number reasons; we are removing discarded items from the city landscape, upcycling and repurposing items keeping them out of the landfill, creating public art, paying local artists, distributing free reading materials and this is an adoption model which encourages civic engagement,” said Howard.
To date, thousands of reading materials in various languages have been distributed and more adopters are looking to be a part of the #LBOT family!
