Visitors from near and far flock to the Jersey Shore for its scenic views, expansive shoreline, and beloved beach towns where millions of families make cherished memories each year. However, did you know that the Jersey Shore is also home to a distinct ecosystem unlike any other in the world? Lurking just beneath the sand and seas lies thousands of creatures great and small, each with their own quirks, characteristics, and contributions that play a part in shaping the environment around us. With brisk winds and that chilly Atlantic air, you might not be too keen on taking a trip to the shore at the peak of winter. Thanks to the New Jersey State Museum, however, you don’t have to travel further than the Capital City to get an up-close gander at some of the creatures which call New Jersey home.

On Saturday, January 20th, you are invited to join the New Jersey State Museum for activity cart fun in the museum’s “Written in the Rocks” exhibit. This event will take place at 1:00pm at the NJSM campus, located downtown at 205 W State St, Trenton, NJ 08608. This event, which is appropriate for all ages, is free to attend. Both kiddos and grow ups alike will be enthralled as the NJSM introduces you to some of the animals that inhabit the Jersey Shore coastline. Guests will have the opportunity to learn more about the animals that inhabit the New Jersey coast year-round, as well as those who come and go throughout the calendar year.

This activity is based around the museum’s fascinating “Written in the Rocks” exhibit, which is located on the 2nd floor of the NJSM’s main building. This gallery invites visitors of the museum to explore the fossils that lurk beneath our steps and offer intriguing insights into how life has evolved on our ever-changing planet. Guests will have the opportunity to travel 3.5 billion years to the past as you get to know curious creatures such as the Dryptosaurus, turtles, birds, mammals, and much more. Whether you’re a fossils fiend or looking to learn more, you don’t have to be a paleontologist to pursue this remarkable display!
