When the holidays rolls around, it offers us an opportunity to set aside the hustle and bustle of our day to day lives, opting for a slower pace and savoring the season. The holidays are also a wonderful time to connect with our communities, to look past our differences and cherish what truly matters. During this special time of year, it is not the gifts that matter, but the traditions and celebrations that bring us together. And in Trenton, we have a few holiday traditions of our own – perhaps none greater than the community’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting.
On a chilly Friday afternoon, leaders, neighbors, and friends from all over the community gathered on the steps of City Hall to celebrate this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting. A highly anticipated event all over town, this beloved yearly tradition is the official launch of the holiday season in Trenton. Upon arrival, guests were met with a whole host of spirited holiday performances to help set the tone for the evening. Some of the evening’s featured performers include the TCHS Marching Band & Dancers, Sprout U of the Arts, and countless other acts. As the sounds of holiday tunes filled the air, excitement grew as the time drew nearer to light up the tree for the first time this season. With dozens gathered on the steps of City Hall, with a roaring countdown and flip of a switch, it was officially time to light up the night in the Capital City.
In addition to the day’s excitement, attendees also had the opportunity to visit with a very special guest: Santa Claus! Arriving during the Christmas Parade, there was no doubt that Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and his elves were riding into town in style. Kiddos and grown-ups alike were in for a treat at this year’s event, as a whole cast of characters including the Grinch, Olaf, Boomer T. Thunderbird, and other festive friends came to town to help spread the holiday cheer. The perfect start to another holiday season in Trenton, the 2023 tree lighting festivities will go down as the city’s finest celebration yet.
This cherished yearly celebration is hosted by Trenton’s Department of Recreation, Natural Resources, and Culture. Throughout the year, this division helps bring our city together through celebrations, community hubs, and plenty of opportunities for fun for all ages. Other seasonal highlights include Trenton’s Hanukkah celebration, which was held on December 7th, as well as the upcoming Kwanzaa 365 event, which will be hosted on December 27th. The Department of Recreation plays a critical role in assuring that not just during the holidays, but every day, Trentonians have the tools needed to make their neighborhoods a great place to live and play.
