This fellowship opportunity is a wonderful chance to connect with the community, get out in nature, and enjoy a more well-rounded education of the region’s abundant natural resources. Per Linda Mead, President and CEO of the D&R Greenway Land Trust, “This Fellowship will enhance both the educational and career experience of the candidate selected, who will become a member of a larger cohort with the Alliance for Watershed Education.”

Ms. Mead went on to share about the historic and cultural importance of the D&R Greenway, stating “The preservation story of Point Breeze, a 60-acre property preserved by New Jersey Green Acres, D&R Greenway Land Trust, and the City of Bordentown, is an ecologically important property at the confluence of the Delaware River and the Crosswicks Creek in Bordentown, NJ. just south of Trenton. The property’s history goes back to the native Lenape people 13,000 years ago, and the estate of the exiled King of Spain, Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte.” Continuing, she noted “Whether helping to lead an educational kayak experience, tending to a historic sharing garden, or guiding a tour of the Discovery Center, each day promises to align as a unique fellowship opportunity.”

Nancy Faherty, D&R Greenway’s Director of Donor and Community Engagement, expressed the depth of the fellowship’s significance beyond being a paid summer job along the river in Bordentown, NJ. She emphasized its connection with The Alliance for Watershed Education, a group supported by The William Penn Foundation. A decade ago, the Foundation initiated the Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI) to combat four major threats to clean water in the river basin: stormwater, agricultural runoff, deforestation, and groundwater depletion. “Over the years, the Foundation has collaborated closely with D&R Greenway due to our alignment with their efforts. The person selected for this Fellowship will become part of a cohort that they can continue to work with as a future environmentalist,” Faherty said.
