Election season is gearing up, and before you know it, it’ll once again be time to make our way to the polls. While elections are always of critical importance for the civically-minded, with a number of national candidates on the ballot, this upcoming election is no doubt one of the most important of our lives. Both as individuals and as a community, staying involved in the election and voting process is a sure-fire way to defend our democracy and make sure that these processes remain accessible and available to all residents of New Jersey. If you’re interested in helping make Election Day a success, and want to make a few bucks along the way, you’re the perfect candidate to become a poll worker in the great Garden State!

The New Jersey Department of State is currently seeking applicants from throughout the region to serve as poll workers in this year’s upcoming elections. As a poll worker, you will have the opportunity to make $21.43 per hour on in-person early voting days and $300 on Election Day. For those interested in applying, the ideal candidate will be:

  • A United States citizen and a resident of New Jersey.
  • A registered voter in the county in which you reside.
  • At least 16 years of age. College and high school students are encouraged to apply.
Note: Those under 18 years of age will work limited hours per shift and do not have to be registered to vote. Contact your County Board of Elections for further information.
  • Not running as a candidate in this election.

There are a number of work dates available to applicants, including:

  • Primary Election:
    • In-person Early Voting Period: May 29, 2024 – June 2, 2024
    • Election Day: June 4, 2024
  • General Election
    • In-person Early Voting Period: October 26, 2024 – November 3, 2024
    • Election Day: November 5, 2024

When submitting your application, guests can indicate what shift would be best for their schedule, as well as which election days you’d like to serve. The application is a brief, straightforward questionnaire which can be filled out on the Department of State’s website, linked here: Poll Worker Applications – DOS.

As a poll worker, you will have the opportunity to connect with residents of your community, assist voters with the process, and help your friends and neighbors make their voices heard. In addition to financial compensation, poll workers can also take great satisfaction and pride knowing that you’ve meaningfully contributed to your local community. A great way to get involved, make some money, and uplift democracy along the way, this is a wonderful opportunity for residents of all ages and stages.

If you have any questions or would like any assistance enrolling as a poll worker, please contact the NJ Division of Elections at nj.elections@sos.nj.gov or 609-292-3760 for additional assistance. If working the polls is one of your goals this election season, don’t delay and be sure to submit your application today!
