Reading is a fundamental part of life. From navigating the signs on the street to learning about different perspectives and cultures, reading can be a powerful tool in understanding and contextualizing the world around us. Developing a love of reading, especially at a young age, can be a truly transformative habit that has the potential to reap benefits for years to come. If you’re looking to get your child on the right track and foster a love of literature, be sure to join the Trenton Free Public Library for their upcoming book drive.
On Monday, June 26th, join the Trenton Free Public Library for a free children’s book giveaway. This event will be held from 11am to 7pm at the library’s main campus, located at 120 Academy St Trenton, NJ 08608. This event is made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in honor of the Katherine Hatton Book Fund. Guests are invited to the library’s children’s room, where they will be greeted with dozens of books for children ages 0 to 18. Whether your little one is just learning how to read or about to head off to college, guests will be able to find an appropriate selection for any age and stage of development. Books are available in all genres, so whether your child is a budding history buff, a connoisseur of the creative, or on the hunt for their next great adventure, everyone is certain to walk away with a title they love.
Summer is right around the corner, and that means school is almost out. While the prospect of a season off school sounds like a dream to most children, summer can present some unique challenges to young learners. Summer learning loss is a phenomena that occurs in school-aged children, resulting in lowered rates of learning retention from the prior school year. Research indicates that students lose approximately 2 months of reading ability over the course of the summer vacation. However, no need to fret! By your child reading just four to five books over the course of the break, you can help put a significant gap in any learning loss your child might experience over the summer.
Thanks to the Trenton Free Public Library, residents of all ages can foster and develop a love of reading right in our community. For decades, the Trenton Free Public Library has been providing the community with access to hundreds of books, countless educational opportunities, and a community space to learn and connect with fellow Trentonians. The library also offers an extensive collection of books, seminars, and more specifically geared towards children, meaning even the youngest Trenton resident can join in on the fun.
