Although it may not be something we often think about, flags are a key signal that many of us equip on a day to day basis. Flags are a way we identify ourselves and can be a way of expressing our pride, whether that be in our country, our favorite sports team, or any number of other topics. Not just merely a piece of fabric, flags give us something under which we can unite, a common cry which connects us through the ages. A profound symbol of a place and time, these banners offer us a glimpse into the people, places, and things they represent.

Within the context of wartime, flags were a way our troops united, offering a tool to find their fellow soldier. There were dozens of different flags employed at the time, each representing their own faction of fighters. As researchers have discovered these flags over the years, they have had the power to illuminate the various alliances and legions which made up those fighting in the Civil War. Unlike many states, whose Civil War flags have been returned to their state capital, New Jersey is one of the few to put these on display, allowing the general public to get a glimpse at some of our nation’s more treasured artifacts.

On Thursday, December 28th, you are invited to the New Jersey State Museum for this year’s Civil War Flag Unveiling. The festivities will begin at 10:00am at the NJSM campus, located at 205 W State St, Trenton, NJ 08608. This year, the NJSM will be unveiling a total of five new flags which will be added to the collection. The afternoon’s festivities will be guided by flag historian, Dr. David Martin, and Cultural of Cultural History, Nicholas Ciotola. Whether you’re a Civl War buff or looking to sharpen your knowledge on this pivotal moment in American history, all are welcome to be a part of this enlightening and exciting morning.
