The tale of “A Christmas Carol” follows Ebenezer Scrooge, an angry elderly man with a complete disregard for the spirit of the holiday season. The show opens on Christmas Eve, seven years after the death of Scrooge’s business partner, Jacob Marley. With a “bah, humbug!” in-tow, Scrooge turned down Christmas dinner with his nephew, turned away charities, and even neglected his loyal clerk, Bob Cratchit. That night, Scrooge was visited by Jacob Marley’s ghost. As a punishment for a lifetime of greed, Marley’s ghost is forced to wander the earth with heavy chains. That same night, Scrooge was visited by three spirits: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
After a trip down memory lane and a glimpse into how his actions impact the present, Scrooge is confronted with his own future. After realizing the path he was on would lead him to complete isolation, Scrooge awoke the next morning a changed man. Overwhelmed by the blessing of redemption, Scrooge spends Christmas day righting many of his previous wrongs. Realizing the error of his ways, Scrooge would go on to embody the Christmas spirit, treating all those he encountered with kindness, generosity, and warmth.
With a complex plot and an ensemble of characters, “A Christmas Carol” is a feat for any seasoned theater troupe. However, Passage Theatre Company is taking on this magnificent story with a twist: only two actors will be featured! By utilizing masterful theatrical story-telling (and a little help from some puppets!), Peter Bisgaier (Ebenezer Scrooge) and Rich Bradford (Charles Dickens & others) bring this classic story to life with a hilarious new way. If you aren’t able make it to the live performances, not to worry! You can stream the performance from December 14th through December 18th here: Streaming – A Christmas Carol. Streaming access is $15 per household.
Audiences looking to contribute to Scrooge’s ultimate legacy are invited to participate in donating items to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen for the upcoming winter season.
