On or around April 15th, 2024, contractors for Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) will begin work on a remediation project, located at the parking lot by the Department of Labor and Division of Taxation buildings. Dubbed the John Fitch Way Project, these efforts will be carried out in accordance with the regulations of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Prior to an abundance of natural gas, these materials were “manufactured” at a former plant which was once in operation at this location. While Manufactured Gas Plants were common and met an important need at the time, these plants did leave behind unintended consequences for the local environment.

In order to improve the conditions of this property, PSE&G will be embarking on a soil removal and replacement effort, with plans to excavate approximately 100,000 tons of MGP-impacted soil. Any remaining in-ground infrastructure related to the MGP operations will also be removed. The majority of this work will be performed within a temporary tended enclosure. Any excavated soil, as well as any impacted groundwater and stormwater, will be treated at an off-site facility. From preparing the site to restoration, PSE&G anticipates the work taking approximately 18 months to complete.

Prior to the beginning of this project, PSE&G has set aside time to discuss the upcoming project with the public. Residents have the opportunity to participate in the following upcoming information sessions:
