The Community Empowerment workshops are designed with non-profit leaders and other grassroots organizers in mind. By offering this workshop, the Smith Family Foundation hopes to impart practical tools and strategies to help leaders have a more effective, organized approach to their efforts. When our leaders are better equipped with the resources they need, the entire community stands to benefit. Trenton is already brimming with skilled and capable advocates, and this course is here to help our city’s activists take their efforts to the next level.
The first Community Empowerment workshop was held in 2018, and the impact of these sessions has been felt in Trenton and beyond ever since. Since its beginning, the workshop has educated over 25 non-profit organizations on best serving the City of Trenton. Although each organization may have a different approach, every participant has a distinct and sincere commitment to improving the city. These organizations exist as part of the thriving advocacy ecosystem here in Trenton, and the Smith Family Foundation continues to exemplify what makes our city’s non-profits so unique.
The Smith Family Foundation was founded in 2016 after Pearlie Smith and her seven children received a significant financial blessing. Rather than keep the riches for themselves, the family collectively decided to use the opportunity to improve the quality of life for the people of Trenton. Even before this newfound opportunity, the Smith family was and remains committed to the betterment of the Trenton community. The organization now offers a variety of resources to the city, including grant opportunities, education, research, and more. Through their core values of education, cultivation, transformation, and urban ministry, it is evident that the Smith Family Foundation will be enriching our community for years to come.
