The city of Trenton proudly boasts being the capital of both the state of New Jersey as well as the capital of meat. While most readers probably think of pork roll when they hear “Capital of Meat”, I am actually not referring to pork but rather beef, City Beef & Provisions to be exact.

City Beef & Provisions was established in 1955 on North Willow Street, an area commonly referred to as “The Meat District.” The building at 246 N. Willow was originally a Trenton meat packer operating since 1903.

The company was led by Pete Diaz for five decades until 2014 when the business was purchased by Rick Tarantino and James Nelson. Through the establishment’s 60 years in existence, one thing has remained constant, a commitment to Trenton.

The company has been a staple in the Trenton community for six decades by hiring Trentonians, engaging in events such as National Night Out, and being the wholesaler providing meats to several area restaurants. The operation has been thriving and expanding in the capital city helping make Trenton the place “Where Good Tastes Meat” as their slogan states.

While they function predominantly as a wholesaler, much of their business comes from local patrons walking in. They boast a robust menu of meats that includes beef, pork, poultry, ribs, links, franks, and steaks (highly recommended). Their menu also features many frozen items, pastas, and seasonings all available in bulk and individual sizes.

The next time you are getting ready to fire up the grill, consider picking up some items from City Beef & Provisions, “Where Good Tastes Meat”
