Attention all aspiring anglers! Summer is on its way, and a breezy day fishing along the Delaware is the perfect kick-off to warm weather fun.
On Saturday, June 3rd, the City of Trenton will be hosting the Trenton Youth Fishing Derby. The event will be held from 9:00am to 1:30pm at Stacy Pond, located at 1399 Riverside Dr, Trenton, NJ 08618. Youth in grades 2nd through 8th are invited to attend. The event is free to participate in, but advanced registration is required. If your young fisherman plans to attend, please feel free to fill out the registration form here: Register – Youth Fishing Derby. Alternatively, registration forms can also be picked up at Trenton City Hall, located at 319 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08608. Attendance is limited and admission is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to register early!
In order to attend, children must have a parent or guardian present at all times. Children should also come equipped with outdoor necessities, including protective eyewear, a hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, rain gear, plastic bags, etc. However, all necessary fishing gear for youth will be provided by the City of Trenton. Your child is certain to be REELING with excitement to participate!
Over the course of the day, children will have the opportunity to participate in fishing competitions to win prizes. Kids will also have the opportunity to have some hands-on fishing education, and will have the chance to dive into exciting subjects like fishing basics, how to stay safe on the water, and how to identify some of the many magnificent creatures that call the Delaware River their home. All this, alongside other fun water activities, will make a splash during this fantastic day in Trenton.
Fishing is a wonderful opportunity for like-minded members of the community to connect, get outdoors, and enjoy a day taking advantage of one of our community’s finest natural resources. The Delaware River is a truly magnificent body of water, earning the title of one of America’s first Wild and Scenic Rivers. Over its vast 330 mile domain, the Delaware River is home to over 90 species of fish, including American eels, Eastern brook trout, and striped bass. The Delaware is also a popular aviary destination, as over 200 bird species rely on the waterway to survive. In fact, the Delaware is home to one of the Northeast’s largest populations of wintering bald eagles in the region. With fascinating species small and large, the Delaware River is the ideal backdrop for a day of nature exploration and fun.
