The world is full of small wonders if we only take the time to see them. Many things we take for granted, like the weight of gravity or the pull of a magnet, may fade into the background of our consciousness, reflecting nothing more than a reality of our day-to-day lives. However, to little learners, these simple actions unlock a world of wonder for a mind just getting to know the ins and outs of our universe. Suppose you want to make the most of your little one’s curiosity. In that case, the New Jersey State Museum’s Small Explorers program is the perfect opportunity to dive into the magic of everyday living.

For November, the theme of this installment of Small Explorers is “Magnet Magic.” This engaging, fun afternoon invites young learners to the New Jersey State Museum to enjoy a hands-on deep dive into the month’s featured topic. This month, Small Explorers will dive into magnets, how they work, and what you can do with these curious creations.

The festivities for the day will kick off with a reading of “Magnet Max” by Monica Lozano Hughes (author) and Holly Weinstein (illustrator). Afterward, kiddos will have the opportunity to explore the science behind what makes magnets push and pull. Afterward, young learners can put this knowledge into action with some fun, hands-on activities to drive the lesson home. Children will have the opportunity to explore what objects are attracted to magnets and even move objects without touching them. By the end of the afternoon, the magnificence of magnets will not be lost on any participating child.

There will be three sessions, including a 9:45 a.m., an 11 a.m., or a 12:15 p.m. slot. This event is intended for guests ages 0 through 5, and families and siblings of participating attendees are also welcome to attend. If you wish to participate in this month’s session, sign up soon, as spots will fill up quickly! To register, please email njsmfsmallexplorers@gmail.com with your choice of session time, name, contact information, and number of children/adults attending to register.
