Let’s face it: completing your taxes is seldom a walk in the park. From the seemingly endless forms to the complicated softwares, tax season can put a strain on both your brain and your wallet. And if you find yourself confused or overwhelmed when it comes time to file your taxes, you aren’t alone. Each year, countless Americans are faced with the very same questions you may be asking yourself now. However, with a bit of help and support from the experts, you’ll be ready to take on whatever this tax season throws your way.

Mercer County residents in need of assistance with their taxes are encouraged to take advantage of the United Way’s numerous tax prep assistance locations throughout the region. If you currently live in the region and make $65,000 or less a year, you are eligible to receive free filing assistance from IRS-trained tax professionals. Tax preparation services are being offered at a number of sites throughout the county, including:

  • Boys & Girls Club Spruce Street Community Center 1040 Spruce Street, Lawrenceville, NJ: Opens 2/10/2024 – Closes 4/13/2024, Walk-Ins available, Saturday – 11am-3pm. Spanish language assistance is available.
  • Hamilton Public Library1 Justice Samuel Alito Way, Hamilton, NJ: Walk-Ins are accepted and appointments are available. Opens 2/7/2024 – Closes 4/11/2024Wednesday & Thursday – 9am-12pm To schedule an appointment, please register online at uwgmc.org/freetaxprogram or call 609-896-1912. Please note that the library itself does NOT schedule appointments.
  • Salvation Army Trenton 575 E State Street, Trenton, NJ: Opens 2/6/2024 – Closes 4/11/2024. Walk-Ins are accepted, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday – 12pm-4pm. Spanish language assistance is available on Thursday.
  • United Way of Greater Mercer County3444 Quakerbridge Rd, Bidg 3, STE 101, Hamilton, NJ: Opens 2/6/2024 – Closes 4/11/2024, Walk-Ins available Tuesday – 5pm-8pm (Spanish language assistance available). There are also slots by appointment only on Wednesday & Thursday & Wednesday – 5pm-8pm. To schedule an appointment, please register online at uwgmc.org/freetaxprogram or call 609-896-1912.

If you plan on attending, please come prepared with a number of key documents including a photo ID, Social Security/ITINs and Date of Birth for the taxpayer and any other dependents you are claiming. If you are married and filing on behalf of your spouse, please also come prepared with your spouse’s social security number, as well as confirmation as to whether or not your spouse itemized their return. You will also need to come prepared with any applicable tax forms, including documents like your W2, 1099 forms, charitable contributions, banking information, etc. A full list of required documents can be located on the graphic below.
